Nigeria pulled off a sensational second-half comeback to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 and claim their 10th TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title on Saturday night at the Stade Olympique in Rabat.

Down 2-0 at halftime in front of a raucous Moroccan crowd, the Super Falcons produced a masterclass in resilience and attacking precision to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and reaffirm their dominance as the queens of African women’s football.

Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Joe Echegini were the heroines on the night, each finding the net in a thrilling second half that silenced the Atlas Lionesses and their supporters, dashing Morocco’s hopes of a historic first continental crown on home soil.

The final lived up to its billing, pitting a determined host nation against Africa’s most decorated women’s football team.

Morocco took control early, much to the delight of the home crowd.

In the 12th minute, captain Ghizlane Chebbak ignited the stadium with a superb long-range effort, curling the ball past Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie to give her side a dream start.

The Atlas Lionesses doubled their advantage in the 24th minute when a clever pass from Ibtissam Jraidi split the Nigerian defence and found Sanaâ Mssoudy, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

With a 2-0 deficit at the break, the Super Falcons looked in deep trouble.

But head coach Justin Madugu’s halftime team talk sparked a dramatic turnaround.

Nigeria emerged from the tunnel with renewed purpose. Esther Okoronkwo pulled one back just five minutes into the second half with a powerful strike that gave Morocco’s goalkeeper no chance.

The equaliser came soon after, with Folashade Ijamilusi converting a loose ball in the box to level the score.

As the match approached its climax, Joe Echegini delivered the decisive blow in the 86th minute, finishing off a sweeping team move to complete the comeback and secure the title.

With the win, Nigeria extends its record as the most successful team in WAFCON history, lifting the trophy for the 10th time.
