The Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed suggestions that the government influenced the resignation of Dr Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) responsible for Corporate Affairs.

His comments come amid public debate and speculation that Dr Asare’s departure may have been politically motivated.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, June 15, Kwakye Ofosu said the resignation was initiated by Dr. Asare himself and followed established procedures. He stressed that the constitutional process for removing an Electoral Commission member was not triggered.

He explained that Dr Asare had formally written to President John Dramani Mahama indicating his intention to leave office after completing his tenure.

“There is no basis for giving any assurance because nothing of that sort has happened. The process for removing a member of the Commission is clearly spelled out by law. Dr Bossman Asare himself, of his own volition, wrote to the President indicating his desire to leave at the appointed date, and that is what happened,” he said.

According to him, steps are now being taken to begin the process of appointing a replacement in line with constitutional and statutory requirements governing the EC.
