GACL installs new screening equipment at Accra Airport; Laptops, shoes, and belts can remain on
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has deployed advanced security screening equipment at the passenger checkpoints of Terminals 2 and 3 at Kotoka International Airport.
The upgrade aims to strengthen aviation security while improving passenger convenience by accelerating the screening process.
In a public notice issued on Saturday, July 11, 2026, GACL announced that under the new system, travellers will no longer be required to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their cabin baggage.
Additionally, passengers can keep their shoes and belts on while passing through security checkpoints, unless security profiling or assessments indicate that additional checks are required.
The upgraded technology also permits passengers to leave Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels (LAGs) inside their carry-on bags during the screening process, as separate inspections for these items may no longer be necessary. GACL, however, reminded travellers that international aviation regulations remain strictly in force, meaning any container holding liquids exceeding 100 millilitres remains prohibited in hand luggage.
To further ease movement and reduce wait times, the new setup features an Automatic Tray Return System (ATRS). This mechanism automatically and rapidly returns screening trays to passengers after inspection, allowing them to repack their personal belongings more quickly.
According to GACL, the migration to the new technology will be carried out progressively and in phases. During this transition period, the new advanced equipment will operate alongside existing screening hardware and procedures to maintain continuous operations. GACL has appealed to passengers and airport stakeholders for their patience and cooperation as the new system is rolled out.
