BoG bags US$10.7bn in FX inflows; down US$3.8bn from 2021's US$14.5bn (26.3%) - A-G's report

Total foreign exchange inflows of the Bank of Ghana for the year 2022 came to US$10,754.44 million. 

Of this total, US$9,765.45 million, representing 90.8%, were surrendered for cedis, whereas the remaining amount of US$988.99 million, representing 9.2%, were the non-surrender portion of gross forex receipts, according to the Auditor-General's report on the Consolidated Statements of Foreign Exchange Receipts and Payments of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) for the year ended 31 December 2022.

The total amount of US$13,959.71 million was recorded as payments in 2022. 

Out of this amount, US$13,308.18 million, representing 95.33% were surrendered for cedis. 

The non-surrendered portion was US$651.53 million, representing 4.7% of the total forex payments.

The central bank's foreign exchange inflows for 2022 were derived from cocoa, capital, and invisible receipts. 

These totalled US$10,754.44 million compared with the US$14,592.22 million recorded in 2021, a decrease of US$3,837.78 million or 26.3%. 

This showed a downward movement in forex receipt. 

For the year ended 31 December 2022, foreign exchange from capital receipts constituted the highest inflows, contributing 48.6% of the total inflows. 

In 2021, however, capital receipts, which were the highest inflows, contributed 57.7% of the total foreign exchange receipts.

Total foreign exchange outflows for the period inched by US$1,154.21 million.

or 9.0% to US$13,959.71 compared with US$12,805.50 million recorded in 2021.

Foreign exchange payments increased by US$1,154.21 or 9.0% to US$13,959.71 million from US$ US$12,805.50 million in 2021.

The main components of the foreign exchange payments were import payments for energy and non-energy (visible import payments), other imports, capital, and invisible payments.
