NPA boss appeals to Ghanaians to accept GHC 1 Fuel Levy: “It’s painful but necessary”

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has appealed to Ghanaians to exercise patience and understanding following the introduction of a new GHC 1 per litre levy on fuel.
Describing the decision as difficult but unavoidable, Mr. Tameklo acknowledged the economic hardship many citizens are already enduring and emphasised that the levy was introduced only out of necessity.
“We are pleading with Ghanaians. This is painful, but it is necessary. Please bear with us. We beg you,” he said in a statement on his Facebook wall.
According to Mr. Tameklo, the levy is critical for maintaining a stable and secure fuel supply chain, supporting national fuel reserves, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s petroleum sector.
He assured the public that the government is fully aware of the burden this places on households and businesses and stressed that the decision was not made lightly.
The move, he added, forms part of broader efforts to stabilise the sector and avoid disruptions in fuel availability.
In a bid to build public trust, Mr. Tameklo said the revenue generated from the levy would be managed transparently and accountably.
He added that mechanisms would be put in place to provide regular updates to the public on how the funds are being utilised.
Government sources also reiterated that the levy is part of a broader strategy to reduce Ghana’s reliance on external fuel sources and to strengthen the country’s energy security in the long term.
