Mahama to launch Ghana Labour Export Programme to boost youth employment

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to officially launch the Ghana Labour Export Programme, a strategic initiative aimed at creating overseas job opportunities for Ghana’s youth through international employment partnerships.
Addressing residents of the Ahafo Region on Saturday, May 31, during his ongoing Thank You tour, Mahama revealed that the government is in advanced talks with several countries experiencing labour shortages.
These discussions are focused on enabling Ghanaian professionals to secure fixed-term employment contracts abroad.
“We will soon launch the Ghana Labour Export Programme.
There are labour shortages in many countries across the world. We are negotiating with several of those countries to export some of our professionals to work on fixed-term contracts abroad,” he stated.
The programme is expected to span multiple sectors, including agriculture, construction, healthcare, hospitality, and logistics. Specific job categories being targeted include electricians, welders, mechanics, nurses, chefs, caterers, drivers, warehouse supervisors, and machine operators.
Mahama also disclosed that an agreement has already been signed with one partner country for the export of 2,000 temporary workers.
He emphasised that recruitment into the programme will be conducted transparently and equitably, ensuring fair representation from all 16 regions of Ghana, including Ahafo.
“Young qualified people will be selected fairly from all the 16 regions of our country, including Ahafo,” he assured.
The Ghana Labour Export Programme is part of broader efforts to address youth unemployment and harness global workforce demand to improve livelihoods back home
