COVID-19: Use MoMo instead of cash – MTN to Ghanaians
Telecommunication Company MTN Ghana has called on its subscribers and Ghanaians to use MoMo for all kinds of payments to reduce the use of cash during this season of COVID-19.
The call was made during the launch of the celebration of Mobile Money month on Friday, 7 August 2020 in Accra.
The celebration of the Mobile Money month was launched under the theme “the Relevance of Momo in a COVID-19 world.”
The theme for this year’s celebration was selected to emphasise MTN Momo’s agenda a few years ago, to advocate for a Cash-Lite Society and the use Of MoMo for all forms of financial intermediation including payments.
Speaking at the launch, General Manager for Mobile Money Limited, Eli Hini reiterated the significance of MTN MOMO in the era of the pandemic which has been accompanied by the limited movement of persons.
He said: “Today, under the unfortunate circumstance we find ourselves as a people, we realise that our foresight and relentless investment in MTN MoMo at a time when many shied away from the prospects, are paying off. This is because, in this period of limited movement, MoMo comes in handy.
“We, therefore, encourage the use of MoMo for e-commerce activities, transfer of money to help friends and family, payments for various activities including tithes and offerings, social donations (weddings and funerals) and other forms of financial transactions.”
Mr Hini also commended the central bank for adjusting its policies as part of the COVID-19 initiatives to allow an increase in wallet and transaction limits and the use of validated GSM data to activate mobile money wallets.
MTN Momo also took the opportunity to advise customers to remain vigilant and avoid activities that will make them compromise their MoMo Pin.
It further reminded customers, that MTN will call customers if they win promotions, only using its official number 0244300000.
Besides advocating to drive payments through MoMo, MTN will use the MoMo celebration month to also reward a total of 4,000 MoMo subscribers through the months of August and September.
MTN will also reward High performing MOMO agents and Merchants.
