The Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), Kofi Owusu Hene, popularly known as Kofi Kapito, has urged subscribers of DSTV and GOtv to boycott the services in protest against what he described as exorbitant subscription fees.

Speaking after weeks of engagements with subscribers, Mr. Kapito revealed that the CPA has received numerous complaints about the rising cost of pay-TV services, which many Ghanaians now find unaffordable.

He noted that despite efforts by the Minister for Communications to intervene, subscription fees remain high.

“Consumers have the right to protest unfair business practices.

If subscribers switch off their DSTV and GOtv services, these companies will be forced to listen and review their prices,” Mr. Kapito said.

Citing successful examples of consumer boycotts in Nigeria and the United States, Kapito emphasised that collective action remains one of the strongest tools available to customers.

He urged Ghanaian subscribers to take similar action to demand fairer pricing.

According to the CPA, the boycott is expected to achieve three outcomes:

Send a clear message to service providers that subscribers are dissatisfied with current prices.

Compel companies to reassess their pricing strategy to remain competitive and retain customers.

Promote fair business practices, protecting the long-term interests of consumers.

Describing the move as bold but necessary, the CPA stressed that subscribers hold significant influence over business decisions when they act collectively.

The agency believes that coordinated action will create the pressure needed to secure a reduction in subscription costs.
