Dr. Amina Sammo champions inclusive insurance as a tool for development at UNDP-NIC 3ic demo day
“Insurance is not a luxury, it’s a powerful development tool,” declared Dr. Amina Sammo at the Demo Day of the Inclusive Insurance Innovation Challenge(3ic), organised under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana in partnership with the National Insurance Commission.
The event, held to showcase pioneering solutions in Ghana’s insurance landscape, highlighted the strides made under the UNDP’s Insurance and Risk Finance Facility (IRFF), which has been active in the country since 2022.
Dr. Sammo emphasised the central role of inclusive insurance in building resilience, reducing vulnerabilities, and accelerating progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Since 2022, UNDP Ghana’s IRFF has been driving the transformation of Ghana’s insurance sector,” she noted.
“Today, we celebrate innovation, resilience, and capacity building by spotlighting homegrown innovators creating inclusive insurance solutions.
This is about ensuring no one is left behind.”
The Demo Day featured a diverse lineup of local startups and insurance technology developers presenting groundbreaking products tailored to underserved populations — including informal workers, smallholder farmers, and women-led enterprises.
The initiative aims to bridge the protection gap and expand financial inclusion by promoting scalable, affordable, and accessible insurance models.
Participants and stakeholders from government, development finance institutions, the private sector, and academia commended the initiative’s contribution to de-risking development and strengthening community resilience in the face of climate change, economic shocks, and health crises.
UNDP Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to supporting innovation ecosystems that integrate risk management into national development planning and empower vulnerable communities across the country.
