The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Madam Emelia Arthur, has held discussions with a delegation from Blue Ventures, a UK-based organisation working across Africa, to explore support for Ghana’s Inshore Exclusive Zone (IEZ) Policy.

The policy, introduced under the new Fisheries Act, extends the IEZ from 6 to 12 nautical miles, with the aim of safeguarding artisanal fishers and promoting sustainable fishing practices.

Blue Ventures, which works closely with coastal communities, provides funding, training, data collection, and advocacy to strengthen local fisheries management.

At the meeting, the charity’s Chief Programmes Officer, Mr. Steve Box, commended Hon. Arthur’s leadership and underscored the importance of collaboration with the Ministry to protect and empower fishing communities.

In her response, Hon. Arthur welcomed the partnership, noting areas where Blue Ventures’ support would be most impactful. These include public education on the new policy, stakeholder engagement, and enhanced enforcement of fisheries regulations. She also highlighted the need to strengthen aquaculture, improve fisherfolk safety, and expand empowerment programmes for women and youth in the sector.

Both parties pledged to work together towards a productive collaboration that will enhance sustainable fisheries management and secure livelihoods for Ghana’s coastal communities.
