President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana has risen to become the tenth-largest economy in Africa, describing the milestone as a reflection of steady economic recovery and disciplined fiscal management.

Speaking during the State of the Nation, the President stated that Ghana’s improved ranking places it among the top ten largest economies on the continent, underscoring renewed growth momentum.

He disclosed that the country recorded an average Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate of 6.1 percent for the first three quarters of 2025.

Despite the gains, President Mahama cautioned that economic expansion must be anchored in fiscal discipline to ensure sustainability.

“Growth means nothing without discipline,” he stressed.

According to the President, Ghana achieved a primary surplus of 2.6 percent of GDP, exceeding the initial target of 1.5 percent. He also noted that the fiscal deficit was reduced to 3.1 percent, significantly below the projected 3.8 percent.

President Mahama described the performance as not only prudent governance but clear evidence of the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises.

He explained that reduced borrowing and more responsible public spending have eased financial pressures on households and businesses.

As a result, interest rates are gradually declining, while private sector activity is showing signs of recovery.

The President expressed confidence that sustained discipline and strategic investment would consolidate the gains and drive long-term economic stability.
