Ghana reaffirms commitment to diamond sector reforms at Kimberley Process review visit
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has reiterated Ghana’s commitment to strengthening governance and transparency in the country’s diamond sector as the nation hosts a review visit under the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme in Accra.
Speaking at the opening of the review visit, Mr. Gyamfi highlighted a series of reforms implemented by Ghana to improve oversight within the diamond value chain.
These include enhanced inspection and verification mechanisms, strengthened internal control systems, and capacity-building initiatives for personnel involved in the sector.
According to him, the reforms demonstrate Ghana’s commitment to continuous improvement and responsiveness to global expectations regarding responsible diamond trade.
The review visit, currently underway, is designed to assess Ghana’s progress in implementing the standards of the Kimberley Process while also providing a platform for constructive engagement and peer review.
Activities during the visit include detailed briefings on the country’s legal and regulatory framework governing the diamond industry, the effectiveness of internal control systems, and collaboration with law enforcement agencies and industry stakeholders.
Mr. Gyamfi said the government welcomes feedback from the visiting team and looks forward to productive exchanges that will further strengthen institutional frameworks and support Ghana’s implementation of diamond sector governance initiatives.
He also underscored Ghana’s broader commitment to the Kimberley Process, noting that the country currently serves as Vice Chair of the international certification scheme and is preparing to assume the Chairmanship in 2027.
Ghana, he said, recognises the responsibility that comes with the role and remains dedicated to supporting the evolution of the process through inclusive dialogue, reforms, and consensus-building among participating countries and stakeholders.
“The aim is to ensure that the Kimberley Process remains relevant, responsive and forward-looking, while maintaining its core objective of preventing conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate global diamond trade,” he stated.
Mr. Gyamfi further invited participants to take time to explore Ghana’s rich cultural heritage during their stay, noting that the review visit coincides with the country’s celebration of heritage activities in March.
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is a global initiative established to prevent the trade in conflict diamonds by ensuring that rough diamonds are sourced from conflict-free areas and traded through transparent channels
