The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), in collaboration with the Fisheries Commission (FC), has officially announced the implementation of the 2025 closed season for Ghana’s marine fishing sector.

The annual conservation measure, aimed at restoring declining fish stocks and promoting sustainable fishing practices, is a key part of the government’s broader strategy to protect the country’s marine resources for future generations.

According to the Fisheries Commission, the closed season will apply to all marine fishing fleets, including industrial trawlers and artisanal canoes, and will be enforced in accordance with national fisheries regulations.

Officials from MoFA emphasised that the move is critical to ensuring long-term ecological balance and the economic viability of Ghana’s coastal fishing communities.

The 2025 closed season, they noted, reflects Ghana’s continued commitment to responsible fisheries management and international best practices.
