NIC, DVLA explore reforms in vehicle insurance acquisition ahead of roadworthy certification

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) are considering major reforms in the acquisition of motor insurance as part of efforts to strengthen road safety and compliance.
In a meeting between the Chief Executive of DVLA, Mr. Julius Neequaye Kotey, and the Commissioner of NIC, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, the two institutions discussed introducing new measures that would require vehicle owners to secure insurance coverage before undergoing the roadworthy certification process.
Currently, vehicle owners are issued a roadworthy certificate by DVLA before proceeding to acquire insurance.
However, under the proposed reforms, proof of insurance would become a prerequisite for the issuance of a roadworthy certificate.
According to officials, the move aims to ensure that all vehicles plying Ghana’s roads are not only certified as roadworthy but also properly insured, thereby enhancing safety and protection for road users.
Further details on the implementation timeline and modalities are expected to be announced after broader stakeholder consultations.
