The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has opposed the government's proposed re-establishment of Regional and District Tribunals, urging the immediate withdrawal of the Regional Tribunals Bill from Parliament.

Addressing a news conference, TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah described the proposal as an attempt to revive what he called a "bitter and unfortunate" chapter in Ghana's history.

Mr Ansah said the TUC had thoroughly reviewed the proposed legislation and engaged key stakeholders before arriving at its position. He noted that the labour union had consistently opposed the tribunals, citing recommendations it made during the constitutional review process.

According to him, the TUC believes the constitutional provisions on Regional Tribunals should be removed entirely rather than revived.

He warned that reintroducing the tribunals could undermine public confidence in the justice system and expose it to political interference.

The TUC further called on President John Dramani Mahama and Parliament to halt the legislative process and instead focus on strengthening the existing judiciary.

Mr Ansah said Ghana's past experience with public tribunals should serve as a lesson against reintroducing them, maintaining that strengthening the judiciary remains the most effective way to improve justice delivery and safeguard the independence of the country's legal system.
