Vice President Opoku‑Agyemang urges bold reforms to transform Ghana’s SOEs
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku‑Agyemang has called on Ghana’s public sector leaders to transform state-owned enterprises (SOEs) from fiscal burdens into engines of shared prosperity.
Speaking at the 2026 SIGA Annual Stakeholders’ Conference and Presidential Excellence in Leadership Awards at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, she said Ghana’s over 170 SOEs, which manage significant national assets and employ thousands, must become financially self-sufficient, profitable, and aligned with national development goals.
Highlighting governance and performance management as key to this transformation, Vice President Opoku‑Agyemang stressed the importance of performance contracts, board accountability, and disciplined oversight to ensure SOEs deliver tangible results for citizens.
She also pointed to international examples, noting that countries like South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, and Morocco have successfully reformed public enterprises through performance-linked pay and financial discipline, creating stronger institutions that drive economic growth.
The vice president concluded that these reforms are essential for job creation, sustainable development, and shared prosperity, signaling the government’s commitment to building accountable and results-driven public institutions.
