Ghanaian YouTuber, Elorm Ababio, popularly called Ama Governor will not be part of the Friday, 20 October 2023 enrolment ceremony for lawyers.

This is after the General Legal Council (GLC) declined the YouTuber’s application to be called to the Bar.

“At the Meeting of the General Legal Council held on Tuesday, 17 October 2023, your application to be called to the Bar was declined on accounts of elements noted in your public conduct prior to the application,” a letter dated Wednesday, 18 October 2023 from the GLC addressed to the YouTuber stated.

The letter continued that it was also decided at the GLC’s meeting that the YouTuber “may complete appropriate forms for application to be called to the Bar, any time there is a scheduled enrolment after the 20th October 2023 enrolment ceremony.”

It also added that the Council in the meantime, will “continue to monitor” Ms Ababio’s “conduct.”

Ms Ababio was not called to the Bar in 2022 after the Council had received a complaint of misconduct against her alleging that she could be seen on widely circulated videos engaging in conduct “unbecoming of an applicant-in-waiting-to be called to the Bar.”

Hence, the Council, constituted a committee to investigate the complaint and submit its report.

“After consideration of the report, council decided to permit the student to complete appropriate forms for application to be called to the bar October/November 2023 and that, Council will monitor and observe the student’s conduct during the time leading up to the application to be called to the Bar,” a report of the General Legal Council 2022/2023 legal year at the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) annual conference said.

The report revealed that: “Council further decided that, should the application to be called to the Bar be successful, the student will be required to give special undertaking to be of good behaviour and not to repeat any conduct which may bring the profession into disrepute whilst enrolled on the roll of Lawyers in Ghana. “

It added that: “A letter was, therefore, written to the student to convey the decisions of the Council.”

Although she reapplied again, it appears the council is unhappy with her conduct once again hence denying her request to be called to the Bar this year.

In a recent interview during a demonstration dubbed #OccupyJulorbiHouse, Ama Governor said she sleeps with women and that cannot be a basis for not admitting her to the Bar.

She indicated that she had won her case against those opposed to her and expressed confidence of being called to the Bar this year.
