'Ayeyi Ntoma': Officer Sammy Young reveals inspirational story behind latest song, brimming over with gratitude

Officer Sammy Young has stressed the need to show gratitude to God when one’s circumstances change for the better.
He was explaining the inspiration behind his new dance song Ayeyi Ntoma (Cloth of Praise) on Accra 100.5 FM’s Entertainment Capital, Saturday, December 9, 2023.
The Gospel singer-songwriter said if gratitude and praise were physical yards of cloth, he would always wear them.
“I would even go to Germany and buy loads of them to distribute,” he joked, alluding to a practice in Ghanaian culture.
Officer Sammy Young remembered when he recorded his Manda Adwene Da (I Never Dreamed of This) hit, and the undeserved help he received from legendary music producer Roland Ackah, alias Roro.
He said: “My father Roro took only 180 cedis from me to record me. He said he would use it to buy power for the studio.”
“It was an act of kindness because I could not have paid his regular fee. May God continue to uplift and protect him wherever he is,” he proclaimed.
Officer Sammy Young recalled how he struggled to promote the song, “running” from one radio station to another, from one potential executive producer to another, and from one pastor to another beseeching them for support.
Noting these memories were “from about 20 years ago,” he exclaimed: “I’ve really struggled because of this song!”
Remembering how things turned around for the better, however, he expressed great confidence in God’s providence.
“When your time comes, no matter where you are, God will locate you and bring you out,” he stressed. “When we say this, some people think it is a joke.”
Currently living and working in the United States, he buttressed his point revealing “when the American Embassy called me to come to their office, I was catering for a funeral in the Volta Region. I was with my workers, happily cooking”.
He said he was asked to go to Accra for the interview at the embassy “on Tuesday but I noticed my passport had expired”.
Emphasising the need to network with people of various competencies and industries, Officer Sammy Young excitedly noted how a call to “someone I knew at the passport office” opportunely secured him a new passport on Monday.
These were the events that led to his relocation from Ghana to the US, where he primarily works as a corrections officer in Dallas, Texas.
On the side, Officer Sammy Young is a chef patronised by “a lot of African communities” and as a Gospel artiste, he was crowned the Discovery of the Year at the 2023 Ghana Music Awards-USA.
