Davido reveals 'unusual' way 17 tracks out of 'like 68' were chosen for record-breaking 'Timeless' album

Davido has explained how he settled on the songs on his latest chart-dominating album.
“We made the album with no criteria,” he disclosed to Billboard News’ Rania Aniftos, adding that his team’s aim was “to go into the studio and just make good music.”
Hardly anything was planned, he went on, explaining that “it was just natural vibes in the studio,” with no “pressure” applied on persons or process.
The “17 songs” on the record-breaking Timeless album was decided out of “like 68” songs, he said.
The songs were chosen through “a formula” where the Unavailable hitmaker sent “songs out to everybody, even my friends,” asking them “to vote” for their favourites.
“And it kinda worked out,” he remarked.
Easily, songs like Unavailable and Feel, he noted, were a common pick among his secret listening party.
According to the music mogul, Over Dem, “the intro of the album,” was going to be shelved but for the votes of “everybody” and “my father” Nigerian billionaire Adedeji Adeleke.
Still on the tracklist for Timeless, he said track 11, “the one with Angelique Kidjo” – Na Money, also featuring Highlife stars The Cavemen – was, however, vetoed.
“I said that one is going on the album regardless if it has no votes,” he smiled.
Usually, the 30BG leader personally selects the songs for his albums because he is “very sensitive” about these things.
With Timeless, the singer-songwriter, record producer and music executive had the most first day streams by any African artiste on digital stores including Apple Music and Spotify, with over 50 million plays.
The album also sold over one million copies on its first day of release.
All songs on the tape were new except for the 17th number, Champion Sound, with South Africa’s Focalistic.
