Funke Akindele: Nigerian actress argues feminism isn't hating but empowering women to complementing men
Nigerian movie star Funke Akindele, who identifies herself as a proud feminist, has asserted strong beliefs in women empowerment should not lead to the disrespect of men or misandry.
“I’m a feminist but I don’t support a woman disrespecting her husband. Make sure you do what is right,” the comic said.
She added, “I believe that we are not the weaker gender. Men are supposed to treat women special with respect. Also men should not feel a woman belongs to the kitchen and talked to anyhow.”
Ms Akindele posited a woman must improve her economic strength and complement her husband’s with it.
“We women are strong, and bold,” she continued, “Our economic power is very important, that is why we should make sure we have the power and protect the power so we can support our husbands.”
Funke Akindele spoke to the wife of social media influencer and comedian, Kamo State.
The Nollywood actress's comments come as a bold and refreshing alternative to the trendy antagonistic posture some feminists advise their fellows to take as the appropriate response for the oppression of women. She appears to be for harmony and cooperation of men and women, while challenging women to explore economic possibilities like their counterparts.
