Akyem Nanapa chief urges President Mahama to declare State of Emergency over galamsey crisis

Nana Omari Boabeng, the Ankobeahene of Akyem Nanapa in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region, has made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to declare a State of Emergency to tackle the devastating effects of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in the area.
Akyem Nanapa, a predominantly farming community with a population of about 3,000, is reeling from the impact of unchecked illegal mining operations.
Galamsey activities have polluted vital water bodies, destroyed farmlands, and severely restricted access to agricultural fields—leaving many crops to rot and threatening food security in the area.
Nana Boabeng noted that the situation has escalated beyond environmental degradation.
“We are now dealing with serious social consequences, including a disturbing rise in teenage pregnancies among school children, as the community’s socio-economic structure continues to deteriorate,” he lamented.
The Ankobeahene's call has been echoed by several civil society organisations, local leaders, and concerned citizens who believe that a state of emergency would give the government the authority and resources needed to confront the crisis head-on.
Experts also support the idea, suggesting that such a measure could pave the way for coordinated enforcement efforts, stricter regulations, and the restoration of affected lands and water bodies.
Residents have voiced their frustrations in recent media interviews, sharing firsthand accounts of the destruction galamsey has brought upon their lives and livelihoods.
Many believe that without swift and decisive action, the community’s future hangs in the balance.
Nana Boabeng’s plea reflects a growing urgency across affected communities for stronger leadership and comprehensive intervention to end the illegal mining menace and safeguard the well-being of present and future generations.
