Asantehene to present Bawku conflict mediation report to President Mahama today
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will present his report on the mediation in the Bawku conflict to President John Dramani Mahama today, Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
An official communique from the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
On Monday, December 1, the Asantehene rounded off his mediation effort in the Bawku chieftaincy crisis with a face-to-face meeting between the contending parties at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall, Kumasi.
Chief Tarana John Wuni Grumah, Paramount Chief of Tarana Traditional Area and spokesperson of the Naayiri, led a 30-member delegation to represent His Majesty Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, the Naayiri and Overlord of the Mamprugu and the Mamprusis while Naba Tambis Baalug Paramount Chief of Pusiga led the delegation representing the Bawku Naaba Zugraan Asigri Aburgrago Azoka II and the Kusasi people. Hon. Cletus Avoka acted as spokesperson for the Kusasi delegation with Dr. Issah as spokesperson for the Naayiri and Mamprusis. Both delegations comprised of Chiefs, Lawyers, Academies, Opinion and Youth Leaders.
His Majesty thanked both sides for their civility and maturity and urged them to remember that whatever the outcome of the mediation, they would have to live together as brothers and sisters.
He urged the leaders to start preparing the minds of their supporters to be prepared to put an end permanently to violence and disorder in their communities.
Several mediation committees and efforts have been involved in the long-standing Bawku conflict, which primarily involves a chieftaincy and ethnic dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.
Key mediation bodies include historical government-established committees, a local inter-ethnic peace committee, the National Peace Council and a high-level, ongoing effort led by the Asantehene.
