The Paramount Chief of the Western Nzema Traditional Area, His Royal Majesty Awulae Kwasi Amakye III, has expressed support for the government’s renewed efforts to combat illegal mining through the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP).

The initiative, introduced by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, aims to promote responsible and sustainable mining while creating employment opportunities and strengthening community participation in the management of mineral resources.

During a courtesy visit to the Awulae’s palace, the National Coordinator of rCOMSDEP, Ms Mawusi Ama Mawuenyafia, outlined the objectives of the programme, describing it as an enhanced version of the former community mining initiative.

She explained that rCOMSDEP places traditional authorities at the centre of decision-making by allowing them to identify community development priorities and define expectations for prospective mining investors.

“This programme is an upgrade on what was previously known as community mining,” Ms Mawuenyafia said.

“Traditional rulers now have the opportunity to shape community priorities and negotiate clear expectations with investors before mining operations begin. These agreements are formally documented, witnessed, and approved by rCOMSDEP before the Minister grants a mining lease.”

Responding to the presentation, Awulae Kwasi Amakye III welcomed the initiative but stressed the need for strict oversight to prevent abuse of the programme.

He warned against using the policy as a cover for irresponsible mining practices and reaffirmed his long-standing commitment to protecting the environment and the future of his people.

“If you look at Ghana’s mineral map, you will notice that the mining resources on my land remain largely untapped. I am not against mining, but until the right framework is in place, we will not permit mining here. We cannot trade our future for present needs if mining is carried out irresponsibly,” the Paramount Chief stated.

In response, Ms Mawuenyafia assured the traditional leader that rCOMSDEP, working in collaboration with the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), will intensify efforts to eliminate illegal mining activities and ensure that all mining operations under the programme adhere to responsible environmental and community development standards.

She emphasised that the programme is designed to ensure that mining benefits local communities while safeguarding the environment for future generations.
