The contractor for the Axim Breakwater and Sea Defence Project, Makam Plant Hire (MPH), has assured that the project will be completed within its eighteen-month timeline, despite earlier technical and financial challenges.

Project Engineer at Makam Plant Hire, Mr. Benjamin Ammissah, disclosed that the project is currently 45 per cent complete.

He explained that work, which began in 2024, was temporarily halted due to technical and financial constraints but resumed earlier this year following their resolution.

According to Mr. Ammissah, the project includes the construction of eleven culverts aimed at addressing chronic flooding and improving the poor drainage system in Axim.

He noted that the drainage component is critical to reducing flood risks and improving environmental conditions in the area.

The second phase of the project is designed to protect the property and livelihoods of residents of Axim.

It includes the construction of a 550-metre breakwater, sea defence structures, and a safe landing base for fishing activities, which are expected to enhance coastal protection and support the local fishing industry.

During a site inspection, the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Nelson, commended the contractor for the progress made so far and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the successful completion of the project.

He emphasised that the project is essential to safeguarding the environment and improving the safety and livelihoods of the community.

The Axim Breakwater and Sea Defence Project is expected to play a key role in mitigating coastal erosion, flooding, and the impact of tidal waves in the area once completed.
