Bawku Naba appeals to Nayiri to reconsider rejection of Otumfuo’s mediation outcome
The Overlord of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has appealed to the Nayiri of Mamprugu, Naa Mahami Bohagu Abdulai, to reconsider his rejection of the mediation outcome led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in the long-standing Bawku conflict.
Addressing a press conference in Bawku, the Bawku Naba urged the Nayiri to accept the mediation report in the interest of achieving lasting peace and stability in Bawku and surrounding communities.
The appeal follows the Nayiri’s reported rejection of the Otumfuo-led peace process and his continued recognition of Alhaji Abagre Seidu as Bawku Naba, a position that has contributed to ongoing tensions in parts of the North East Region, including Walewale and Nasia, where security concerns remain heightened.
Naba Azoka II emphasized the humanitarian impact of the conflict, noting that residents continue to face hardship, insecurity, and restrictions on movement due to the prolonged dispute.
He argued that acceptance of the mediation outcome would create the conditions necessary for peacebuilding and allow affected communities to rebuild their livelihoods after years of instability.
The press conference marked the first public address by the Bawku Naba at his palace in about three years.
He called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all parties to lay down their arms and commit to dialogue and reconciliation.
The traditional leader also stressed the importance of unity among stakeholders, stating that peaceful coexistence and cooperation remain essential to restoring normalcy and promoting development in Bawku and neighbouring communities.
