Bono: Pepaase residents cry for help as heavy rains destroy bridge linking farming communities
Residents of Pepaase, a farming community in the Berekum Municipality of the Bono Region, are appealing for urgent government intervention after torrential rains over the weekend destroyed the only bridge connecting the area to three surrounding communities.
The affected bridge, which plays a vital role in the transportation of food crops from the farming communities to the Berekum market, has completely collapsed, cutting off movement and leaving residents stranded.
Speaking to journalists from CTV and Accra FM, residents described the situation as dire.
They noted that the bridge served as the main access route for transporting agricultural produce and connecting families across the area.
“Without this bridge, the communities beyond it cannot reach Pepaase or access health care and markets in Berekum.
In case of an emergency, it would be almost impossible to get help,” a concerned resident lamented.
The residents are calling on the government, through the Berekum Municipal Assembly, to come to their aid and urgently reconstruct the bridge to restore movement and economic activity.
Municipal Chief Executive for Berekum, Hajia Fati Abubakar, visited the affected area to assess the damage and acknowledged the urgency of the situation.
She emphasised that the disruption could lead to a shortage of food in the Berekum market if farm produce cannot be transported.
Hajia Abubakar also appealed to Foam Ghana, a private timber company operating in the area, to support efforts to rebuild the bridge.
“The situation requires immediate attention.
If we do not act swiftly, the entire Berekum Municipality may face food supply challenges in the coming days,” she warned.
