There has been an explosion of stones on the Buduburam stretch of the Kasoa-Winneba highway.

At publication time, Graphic Online reports three – one male and two females – have been confirmed dead as a result of the explosion.

The blasting of stones was undertaken at the site of the contractor working on dualising the Kasoa to Winneba highway.

Classfmonline understands it was routine to blast stones in this part of Buduburam for the road construction but unlike the usual, Monday afternoon's blast came with no prior warning to community members. 

When the unannounced blast occured, taking the community by surprise, eyewitnesses say the flying stones damaged shops, uncompleted buildings, cars, and wounded and killed people even in the comfort of their homes. Some published videos on social media as proof.

"This is weird. This is crazy. See the destruction caused. You did not announce this blasting of rocks. You've killed people. Go and see the number of people badly wounded and sent to St Gregory," an eyewitness lamented in a video, as he showed the extent of destruction where he walked.

After the blast, construction workers, including an Asian, were captured by community members and immediately taken to the palace of the Gomoa Buduburam Chief, Nana Kojo Essel II, according to UTV.

Ghana Police Service, who were seen in one of the videos on social media coming to the scene of the accident, are yet to issue a statement.

Meanwhile, according to the Hospital Administrator at St Gregory Catholic Hospital, Mattias Ayegre-Anaba, "in all, 42 people were brought here".

"Two have already gone to 37 Military Hospital," he added, stating another two would be taken by ambulance to a facility in Winneba. 

He said "18 females, and 9 males are on stable condition," adding "three were okay and had been discharged".

"Unfortunately, we lost three," Ayegre-Anaba, also, indicated in a Citi TV video.
