Central Regional NDC chairman sues Obaatanpa Radio for defamation
The Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Richard Asiedu, has initiated legal action against the management of Obaatanpa Radio, alleging defamation and damage to his reputation.
According to Dr Asiedu, the lawsuit is in response to what he describes as persistent defamatory comments directed at him by individuals allegedly associated with former Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who is believed to own the Kasoa-based radio station.
The made this revelation in a exclusive interview with Overseeronline.com.
Dr Asiedu disclosed his decision to sue while reacting to reports circulating on social media claiming that he, together with the Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Seth Banini, had stormed the premises of the station and ordered its closure.
He rejected the allegations, explaining that intelligence gathered by the party indicated that some NDC supporters were mobilising to attack the station over what they considered continuous insults directed at the NDC Constituency Chairman, Stephen Ofosu Agyare, concerning allegations about his relationship with the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor on the station.
According to Dr Asiedu, he and the MCE visited the station solely to prevent any potential violence and maintain peace.
“Our presence there was to calm tempers and protect lives and property,” he stated.
He further alleged that they were met with hostility from individuals at the station upon arrival.
As tensions escalated, the police were called in to intervene.
Dr Asiedu said the police subsequently secured the premises temporarily to allow tensions to subside, after which the station was expected to resume operations in accordance with the law.
