Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has arrived at the Accra High Court ahead of the expected ruling in the Samreboi mining concession case.

The court is scheduled to deliver its decision today, July 20, following months of proceedings involving Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining Limited, over allegations of unlawful mining activities on the Samreboi concession in the Western Region.

The case had been set for judgment after both the prosecution and defence concluded their arguments. However, the defence has filed an application seeking to suspend the delivery of the ruling, citing a constitutional interpretation matter currently before the Supreme Court.

Lead counsel for Wontumi, Samuel Atta Akyea, has argued that the High Court should stay proceedings until the apex court determines the constitutional questions raised in the application.

The defence lawyer has also informed the court that he is currently out of the country and is expected to return on Wednesday, July 22.

The High Court is therefore expected to first decide whether to proceed with the scheduled judgment or grant the request to postpone the ruling pending the Supreme Court's determination.

Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining Limited are facing charges linked to alleged illegal mining operations at Samreboi. The accused have denied all the allegations and are contesting the charges before the court.
