A Brussels Airlines aircraft en route from Accra to Lomé made a precautionary return to the Accra International Airport (AIA) on Monday evening after developing a technical fault shortly after departure.

According to the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Flight SN278 took off from Accra at 6:06 p.m. but encountered a technical issue while airborne, prompting the flight crew to discontinue the journey and return to the airport as a safety precaution.

The aircraft landed safely at 6:18 p.m., with no reported injuries.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 20, the GCAA praised the flight crew for adhering to established aviation safety procedures in handling the situation.

The Authority said Brussels Airlines has begun investigations into the technical problem in line with standard aviation protocols, with the GCAA providing regulatory oversight.

Following the incident, the airline cancelled Flight SN278.

The GCAA noted that Brussels Airlines is assisting affected passengers in accordance with the provisions of the Ghana Civil Aviation (Economic) Directives, 2019, which outline consumer protection measures for airline passengers.

The Authority also reassured the travelling public that Ghana's aviation safety oversight framework remains effective and that the incident was managed in line with internationally accepted safety standards.
