Chairman Wontumi has arrived at Nsawam prison - Dr Palgrave Boakye Danquah confirms
The spokesperson for Chairman Wontumi's campaign and a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah has confirmed that its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been transferred to the Nsawam Medium Security Prison to begin serving his 20-year jail term.
Speaking in an interview Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah disclosed that Chairman Wontumi was moved from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters under tight security before being conveyed to the correctional facility.
According to him the NPP is yet to have access to Chairman Wontumi, explaining that members of the legal team and party leadership would only be able to assess his condition after visiting him in prison.
Despite the development, he expressed confidence in the NPP stalwart’s resilience, describing him as mentally strong and unwavering in his faith.
According to him, Chairman Wontumi’s belief in God would sustain him through what he described as a difficult period, adding that the party remains hopeful as it continues to support him.
The official also acknowledged the disappointment among party supporters and sympathisers, saying many Ghanaians who have followed Chairman Wontumi’s political career and philanthropic activities over the years have been deeply affected by the outcome of the case.
Chairman Wontumi was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment by the High Court after being convicted on illegal mining-related offences involving his company, Akonta Mining Limited. His legal team is expected to pursue the next legal steps available under Ghana’s judicial process
