Coups: We're committed to Ghana's democracy – Ghana Armed Forces assure Ghanaians

The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, has reiterated the military's commitment to safeguarding the Constitution and respecting the sovereign will of the people.
During a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to his office in Accra, Vice Admiral Amoama emphasised that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has no interest in governance and is solely dedicated to protecting the territorial integrity of the state.
He acknowledged that recent coup d'états in West Africa have raised concerns but assured that such events are a thing of the past where Ghana is concerned.
He expressed confidence that the people of Ghana understand that the military's mandate does not include governance.
Vice Admiral Amoama appreciated the vital role played by the media, including the GJA, in upholding the will of the people in the country.
He noted that while the GAF and the GJA have had a positive relationship over the years, there is room for improvement.
He raised concerns about unethical reporting practices, particularly the publication of unsubstantiated stories and attempts to draw the GAF into political matters.
He encouraged the media to consult with the military before publishing stories related to security issues, emphasising the importance of responsible journalism.
Vice Admiral Amoama highlighted the GAF's open-door policy and its efforts to build constructive relationships with various institutions, such as the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).
He mentioned that the GAF had successfully engaged with the GBA to clarify certain operational matters, fostering better understanding and cooperation.
On his part, Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the President of the GJA, acknowledged the positive growth in the relationship between the military and the media.
He stressed that this relationship has contributed to the development of Ghana's democracy by enabling the media to fulfill its role without fear of military interference.
Mr Dwumfour pledged the GJA's commitment to further strengthening this bond through ongoing engagement with the military leadership.
