Energy Minister announce measures to end metre shortages
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced a series of decisive interventions aimed at resolving persistent meter shortages in Ghana’s power sector.
Speaking at the opening of MBH Power Ghana Limited, a meter manufacturing company in Tema, the Minister described metering as central to fairness, transparency and revenue protection within the electricity distribution chain.
He acknowledged the frustrations faced by consumers and warned that prolonged meter supply challenges undermine the financial sustainability of utility providers.
To address the situation, he disclosed that he has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) to take urgent steps to clear supply bottlenecks and streamline distribution processes.
Among the key measures announced are the promotion of local meter production to curb shortages, a seven-day deadline for ECG and the Energy Commission to resolve meter reading challenges, the upgrading of transformers to prevent overloads and outages, and strengthened complaint-handling systems to ensure faster response to consumer concerns.
The Minister assured the public that Ghana’s power generation capacity remains stable, noting that significant capacity additions over the past 11 months have eliminated load shedding.
He explained that the current challenges are largely distribution-related and are being systematically addressed.
Director of MBH Power Ghana Ltd., Niket Goel, said the company has operated in Ghana since 2007 and has executed several projects, including the supply and installation of shunt capacitors and participation in the Self-Help Electrification Project in parts of the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regions.
He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s economic growth and ensuring a reliable energy supply. According to him, the newly opened factory is expected to help reduce power theft and boost revenue mobilisation for distribution and generation companies.
Mr. Goel further indicated that MBH Power intends to double the plant’s production capacity in the near future, underscoring what he described as the company’s long-term partnership with Ghana’s development agenda.
The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
