The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has ordered traders at the Timber Market in the Greater Accra Region to suspend all reconstruction activities following last Saturday’s devastating fire until investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) are concluded.

The directive was announced on Monday by the Metro Coordinating Director, Mr. Douglas N.K. Annoful, who led an AMA team to inspect the damage on behalf of the Mayor of Accra, Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey.

Mr. Annoful explained that the suspension is critical to allow GNFS and AMA officials to conduct a thorough probe and develop a comprehensive recovery plan for the market.

He cautioned that any unauthorised structures erected before the investigations and planning are completed would be demolished.

“The Assembly will rely on the Fire Service report to design a safer, well-structured trading environment.

Lessons from the Kantamanto Market fire recovery will guide our efforts to ensure proper demarcation and enhanced safety measures,” he stated.

Mr. Annoful extended condolences to affected traders and commended GNFS officers for their bravery in containing the blaze under difficult circumstances.

He revealed that firefighters had to break through a school wall to access the market, underscoring the challenges posed by obstructed entry routes.

He further urged traders to remain vigilant, report unauthorised construction, and avoid blocking access routes, stressing that the Sanitation Court remains active and ready to prosecute offenders.

The AMA assured the public of its commitment to restoring the market in a way that prioritises safety, order, and resilience against future disasters.
