In line with a directive from the presidency, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced that investigations have begun into "the inappropriate conduct of some soldiers during an encounter with some journalists around Spintex in Accra today 30 July 2025".

This was contained in a GAF statement dated July 30, signed by VA Arhin, Captain (Ghana Navy) Acting Director General (Public Relations).

GAF assured "the general public that the investigations will be thorough and those found culpable will be dealt with accordingly".

"The Armed Forces remains professional and will do everything possible to maintain its known high standards," the statement ended.

Below is the official statement from the presidency condemning the way men in military fatigues handled a JoyNews journalist, Carlos Calony, who was covering the aftermath of the demolition of a warehouse on the Spintex Road. While Calony was allegedly assaulted and temporarily detained under unclear circumstances, an eyewitness who was filming the journalist's arrest, by men believed to be National Security operatives, was allegedly assaulted, too.

Government also reiterates our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Ghanaian citizens, whose rights must always be protected.

Government has accordingly directed the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to investigate the incident and ensure that the appropriate punishment is immediately imposed. Appropriate disciplinary and punitive measures must be applied without delay to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.
