Ghana AIDS Commission distributes condoms, HIV test kits as nation marks first International Condom Day
The Ghana AIDS Commission has distributed thousands of condoms and HIV test kits across the country as part of activities to mark International Condom Day and promote safe sex ahead of Valentine’s Day.
The nationwide exercise, held on Thursday, February 13, aims to raise awareness about condom use and help reduce the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly during the festive period.
Director-General of the Commission, Dr Prosper Akanbong, said this is the first time Ghana is formally observing the day. He noted that the initiative is being carried out in partnership with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which is entering Ghana for the first time.
Dr Akanbong said the campaign is intended to encourage protection and public awareness, adding that a variety of condoms, including flavoured and non-flavoured types, would be distributed. HIV test kits are also being made available to help people know their status.
He acknowledged concerns about condom size and comfort but stressed the importance of protection as part of broader efforts to improve public health and safety.
