Gov't increases daily feeding allowance for prison inmates by 94%

Government has announced an increase in the daily feeding allowance for prison inmates.
The increase would rise from GHS1.80 to GHS5, a 94.12% increase.
This decision followed widespread concerns that the previous amount was insufficient to meet inmates' basic nutritional needs.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak disclosed this during a Public Accounts Committee hearing today, Tuesday, September 30, 2025, stating that the increase was part of efforts to enhance prison conditions across the nation.
He explained the increment would be captured in the next government budget presentation as a stand-alone item under prison feeding, having "convinced my colleague the finance minister".
He added it would "take GHS10 million a quarter," to manage the increment.
In response, the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, called for greater investment in prisoners' welfare "beyond the feeding".
She emphasised that improving prison conditions should be a central component of the country's broader strategy to ensure "serious public safety".
