Government reverts Kotoka International Airport to original name, now Accra International Airport
The Ministry of Transport Ghana has announced that the country’s main aviation hub will officially return to its original name, Accra International Airport, reversing the long-standing designation of Kotoka International Airport.
In a press release issued on February 23, 2026, the ministry said the decision forms part of government efforts to restore the facility’s former and internationally recognised identity.
According to the statement, the airport was initially known as Accra International Airport before it was later redesignated. Authorities now consider it appropriate to revert to the original name.
Officials emphasised that the renaming is strictly administrative and will not affect airport operations, safety standards or international travel procedures.
The ministry also noted that, within the records of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the airport’s code has consistently remained “ACC,” meaning airlines, ticketing systems and global aviation databases will experience no disruption.
Implementation of the change will involve a phased update of official documents, statutory instruments, airport signage, digital platforms, aviation publications and other communication materials.
Stakeholders, including airlines, service providers and international partners, have been urged to cooperate with the relevant authorities to ensure a smooth transition.
The ministry expressed appreciation to the public and industry players for their continued support as the country undertakes the renaming process.
