Interior Ministry urges public to stay indoors as flooding disrupts parts of Ghana
The Ministry of the Interior has appealed to the public to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel as heavy rainfall continues to cause flooding in several parts of the country.
The advisory, issued on Monday, June 29, follows widespread flooding that has inundated major roads, disrupted transportation and heightened safety concerns for residents, motorists and pedestrians.
The Ministry advised people already at home not to venture out unless absolutely necessary. Those at their workplaces or in other safe locations have also been encouraged to remain there until weather conditions improve and it is safe to travel.
As part of the safety measures, motorists and pedestrians have been warned against attempting to drive or walk through flooded roads, bridges and waterways. Authorities caution that rising floodwaters can be unpredictable and pose significant danger to lives and property.
To support ongoing emergency operations, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Armed Forces and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have been deployed to affected communities to carry out rescue operations, manage traffic and provide assistance to victims.
The Ministry further advised residents living in flood-prone communities to relocate to safer areas where necessary and report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest security agency or emergency response team.
It also called on the public to remain calm, cooperate with emergency personnel and rely only on official communication as government agencies continue to monitor the evolving situation.
For emergency assistance, the public has been asked to contact the Ghana Police Service on 18555 or 112, the Ghana National Fire Service on 192, or 112 to reach the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
