The Minority in Parliament has declared it will resist any attempt by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to seek additional financial approvals when he presents the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review to the House today.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, July 23, First Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, said the budget review should focus on government's performance, the implementation of its campaign commitments and the settlement of outstanding payments owed to contractors, rather than requesting more funds.

According to the Minority, Parliament has already approved significant financial resources for the government and believes the administration must demonstrate how those funds have been utilised before seeking further support.

Mr. Iddrisu stressed that the caucus would closely scrutinise every aspect of the Finance Minister's presentation, insisting it would not support any proposal for additional funding.

The Minority also called on the government to use the budget review to explain how it intends to clear arrears owed to local contractors, arguing that delayed payments have placed many businesses under severe financial strain.

Beyond contractor payments, the caucus wants the Finance Minister to provide measurable progress reports on major government initiatives, including the Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme, the 24-Hour Economy policy, the proposed Women's Development Bank and the One, Three, Three initiative.

The Minority argued that many of these flagship programmes have yet to produce visible results and remain largely at the announcement stage.

It further maintained that government should prioritise the effective use of already approved resources, noting that Parliament had recently approved a financing package of about US$1 billion.

The caucus insisted that the administration must first account for the utilisation of existing funds and demonstrate progress on its economic agenda before returning to Parliament for additional financial approvals.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson is expected to present the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review later today, outlining the economy's performance during the first half of the year, assessing the implementation of the 2026 Budget and presenting government's revised fiscal outlook and policy direction for the remainder of the year.
