NACOC raises alarm over rising drug abuse among Ghanaian youth

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has expressed grave concern over the growing menace of illicit drug abuse among Ghana’s youth, particularly in secondary schools and universities.
Speaking to the media during the destruction of seized narcotics, Brigadier Maxwell Mantey warned that drug abuse is having a devastating impact on the nation’s future, with increasing numbers of students falling victim to substance use.
He revealed that the commission is intensifying efforts to combat the trend through a dual approach: public education and strict law enforcement.
“We are working tirelessly to sensitise the public, especially young people, about the dangers of drug abuse, while at the same time arresting offenders and ensuring they face justice,” he stressed.
According to Brigadier Mantey, 12 drug-related cases were called in court just last week, underscoring the scale of the challenge.
He noted that NACOC is actively collaborating with traditional leaders, religious institutions, and community groups to raise awareness and curb the spread of drug use.
In a strong warning to traffickers and peddlers, NACOC cautioned that law enforcement agencies are closing in on offenders. “Anyone caught will face the full rigours of the law,” he declared.
Brigadier Mantey emphasised that tackling drug abuse requires a collective national effort, urging parents, teachers, community leaders, and citizens at large to play their part.
He concluded that only through unity can Ghana protect its young people, reduce the harms of illicit drugs, and build a safer and healthier future for the nation.
