The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has appealed to the public to heighten their awareness and take precautions against cybercrime and other forms of criminal activity, particularly those occurring online and along major highways.

Addressing the media at a briefing on Thursday, January 29, COP Donkor said the police remain focused on intelligence-driven operations, citing recent breakthroughs that led to the arrest of seven suspects linked to a highway robbery involving a Council of State member, as well as five others arrested over a separate robbery incident at Nkasem.

She used the opportunity to draw attention to the rising incidence of cyber-related offences, urging citizens to be cautious in their use of digital and social media platforms.

COP Donkor advised the public to avoid disclosing personal or financial information to unfamiliar persons and to be suspicious of unexpected calls or messages seeking sensitive details.

She also issued a strong caution to motorists, particularly individuals involved in the sale of vehicles, to remain vigilant at all times, especially when travelling at night or through less-populated areas.

The CID Director-General further encouraged drivers to take simple but effective safety measures, including properly securing their vehicles, refraining from offering lifts to unknown persons, and exercising caution when responding to distress signals that could be used as a trap.

Beyond road safety, she urged the public to adopt broader personal security habits, such as staying alert in busy locations and informing trusted contacts about their movements.

COP Donkor emphasised that any suspicious behaviour should be promptly reported to the nearest police station to enable swift intervention.

Speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, she praised officers nationwide for their commitment and professionalism in safeguarding lives and property.

She also expressed gratitude to members of the public for their cooperation through the provision of reliable information, and acknowledged the media for its continued support in disseminating police messages and promoting public safety.
