President inaugurates Ghana’s largest Naval vessel, GNS Achimota

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday, December 23, 2024, inaugurated Ghana's largest naval ship, the Ghana Navy Ship (GNS) Achimota, at the Sekondi Naval Base in the Western Region.
The GNS Achimota is part of ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance the Ghana Navy’s operational capabilities.
The new vessel is expected to strengthen the country's maritime security, combat illegal activities, protect natural resources, and bolster regional safety efforts.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Akufo-Addo, who also serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, described the acquisition as a milestone in Ghana’s naval history.
He highlighted the government’s commitment to safeguarding the country's maritime domain and ensuring its sovereignty within the Gulf of Guinea.
"When I assumed the mantle of leadership, I envisioned a Ghana Navy that would be a beacon of strength, resilience, and innovation, one capable of safeguarding our vast maritime resources and asserting our sovereignty on the waters of the Gulf of Guinea," the President stated.
"Standing here today, I see that vision realized, and I am overwhelmed with pride for what we have achieved together."
The President noted that the GNS Achimota is part of a broader fleet expansion that includes over 20 modern platforms. These additions include four Offshore Security Vessels, two Boundary Class Ships, Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boats, and Zodiac Boats, significantly enhancing the Navy's operational reach and capabilities.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by high-ranking government officials, military personnel, and stakeholders in the maritime sector.
The GNS Achimota's introduction marks a significant leap forward in Ghana’s maritime security infrastructure, further enabling the Navy to protect its waters, curb illegal fishing, and combat piracy and other transnational crimes.
The vessel’s deployment underscores Ghana’s determination to play a proactive role in maintaining peace and security within the Gulf of Guinea, a region critical to global maritime trade
