Police take over Immigration Officer in 2,600 AK-47 ammunition trafficking probe

AICO1 Ahmed Abdul Samad

The Upper East Regional Police Command has taken custody of an Immigration officer, AICO1 Ahmed Abdul Samad, in connection with investigations into the illicit transportation of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition intercepted in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect was released to the Police by the Ghana Immigration Service following a request from the Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP John Dzineku Ferguson, after intelligence linked Abdul Samad to the movement of the seized ammunition.

On January 2, 2026, at about 12:20 pm, the Regional Provost of the Bolgatanga Regional Immigration Office, DSI Awaitey Clement Adantey, together with his team, escorted the suspect from the Paga Sector Command and formally handed him over to the Police for further investigations.

Ahmed Abdul Samad, a Mamprusi by tribe and a native of Nalerigu, was stationed at the Paga Sector Command at the time of the incident.

During interrogation, the suspect disclosed that he previously worked as a dispatch rider at the Tema Regional Immigration Headquarters before being transferred to Paga in June 2025.

He said he left behind his body armour plate and an old pair of black long boots at the headquarters.

According to him, on December 26, 2025, he contacted a colleague identified as Isaac, also an Immigration officer based in Accra, to send the items to him.

Isaac allegedly agreed and packaged several items, including a body armour plate, long black boots, a ballistic helmet, an electric diffuser and a disco bulb.

The parcel was reportedly transported via an OA Bus with registration number GT 5771-18, driven by one Charles Brown. Abdul Samad stated that the following day, December 27, 2025, he contacted an individual identified as Siso in Walewale to receive the package on his behalf.

He later learned that Siso had been arrested by the Police.

The suspect is currently in Police custody, assisting with investigations.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing as security agencies work to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the attempted transportation of the ammunition.
