Replacement of NAiMOS operations director sparks debate over anti-galamsey campaign
A group identifying itself as the NDC Serial Callers has raised concerns over the removal of Colonel Dominic Buah as Director of Operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAiMOS), warning that the decision could undermine Ghana’s ongoing fight against illegal mining.
In a press statement, the group described Colonel Buah as a key figure in the country's anti-galamsey efforts, arguing that his leadership contributed significantly to recent successes in tackling illegal mining activities that continue to threaten forests, rivers, and other natural resources.
According to the group, Colonel Buah oversaw major achievements during his tenure, including the recovery and restoration of operational control over nine forest reserves that had been severely impacted by illegal mining. Among the areas mentioned was the Desiri Forest Reserve, which they said had witnessed notable intervention efforts.
The statement further claimed that NAiMOS achieved an operational success rate of 87.7 percent since July 2025 through intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling illegal mining networks.
The group stated that more than 122 coordinated anti-galamsey operations were conducted under Colonel Buah's leadership, resulting in the arrest of over 1,400 suspected illegal miners, including members of foreign mining syndicates.
It also reported that over 450 excavators were seized and rendered inoperable, while thousands of changfang mining platforms were destroyed.
Additionally, the statement alleged that military-grade weapons were recovered from some illegal mining operators during the operations.
The NDC Serial Callers credited Colonel Buah with ensuring professionalism and political neutrality in the execution of anti-galamsey activities.
They also praised efforts that reportedly led to the exposure and arrest of individuals accused of impersonating NAiMOS task force personnel to engage in criminal activities.
The group expressed concern that removing a commander with such experience and achievements could provide illegal mining operators with an opportunity to regroup and exploit the transition in leadership.
Consequently, they called on the government and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to reconsider the decision and reinstate Colonel Buah as Director of Operations.
The statement also urged authorities to address operational challenges previously highlighted by the former director.
These include deploying permanent field task forces, providing low-bed trucks to transport seized excavators, strengthening collaboration with the Blue Water Guards, and enhancing legal support to facilitate the swift prosecution of suspects arrested during anti-galamsey operations.
The group said the timing of the decision was particularly surprising, noting that it came only weeks after Colonel Buah was reportedly commended by President John Dramani Mahama and officials at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for his contributions to the anti-illegal mining campaign.
The NDC Serial Callers further called on government officials, civil society organisations, and stakeholders, including the Patriotic Journalists Against Galamsey (PAJAG), to remain committed to environmental protection and support efforts aimed at sustaining recent gains in the fight against illegal mining.
