The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has announced new restrictions on the use of sirens on government vehicles, stating that only approved officials will be permitted to use them.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, June 23, he said the measures form part of efforts to improve road safety and regulate the use of privileges associated with public office.

According to the minister, a directive issued through the Office of the President requires that sirens may only be installed on official vehicles after a request has been submitted and approved by President John Dramani Mahama.

Mr Mubarak said the President has instructed that ministers and other political appointees will not automatically be granted permission to use sirens and must demonstrate a legitimate need based on their official responsibilities.

He further stated that law enforcement officers have been directed to take action against individuals who use sirens without authorisation and to report such cases to the Presidency.

The minister disclosed that an application process has been established for officials seeking approval to use sirens. Applications submitted to the Interior Ministry will be forwarded to the Office of the President for consideration and final approval.

He noted that some ministers have already submitted applications, which are currently being processed for a decision by the Presidency.

Mr Mubarak said the new measures are intended to address the misuse of sirens, promote discipline on the roads and ensure the proper use of state privileges.
