Journalists have been urged to remain committed to truth, accuracy and ethical reporting, describing the media as a critical pillar in safeguarding democracy.

Speaking at the Ghana Media Summit by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) on July 9,2026, the Deputy Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, said the rise of disinformation, artificial intelligence and rapidly evolving digital platforms has made the role of journalists more important than ever.

"Today's gathering is much more than the launch of an institution. It is a call to action and a shared commitment to defending democracy, safeguarding information integrity and reinforcing the indispensable role of a free, independent and responsible media."

She cited that misinformation and disinformation have become major threats to democratic governance, stressing that journalism must continue to build public trust through fact-based reporting.

"Our mission remains the same, to defend the truth, protect public trust and ensure that facts not falsehoods continue to shape the future of our democracies."

Shamima Muslim described journalism as "democratic infrastructure," saying the profession equips citizens with credible information, holds leaders accountable and gives a voice to the voiceless.

She further called for greater investment in media literacy, arguing that informed citizens are the first line of defence against false information in the digital age.

"Media literacy is therefore not an optional educational programme. It is a democratic priority."

The Deputy Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson also reaffirmed government's commitment to protecting media freedom while promoting responsible journalism, insisting that press freedom and professionalism must go hand in hand.

"Press freedom is not a privilege granted to journalists. It is a democratic right that protects every citizen's right to know."
