The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to upholding freedom of religious belief and practice, describing the country as a shining example of peaceful coexistence among people of diverse faiths.
Addressing Parliament, the speaker highlighted ongoing efforts by the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACPA) and the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), which have been leading workshops and conferences, to promote religious tolerance and understanding across the country.
He noted that Ghana’s record of harmony among Christians, Muslims, and adherents of traditional beliefs continued to attract international recognition, with some Members of Parliament (MPs) recently participating in global conferences to share the nation’s experience.
According to the speaker, there was funding support available for initiatives aimed at advancing religious freedom and fostering collaboration among different faith communities.
He encouraged more MPs and stakeholders to take active interest in such engagements to strengthen Ghana’s social cohesion.
Touching on the issue of traditional shrines, the speaker emphasised the need for sensitivity and thorough research, acknowledging the role of civil society organisations and think tanks in ensuring balanced and inclusive discussions on the matter.
Speaker Bagbin commended the collective efforts of stakeholders, stressing that Parliament remained committed to promoting dialogue, mutual respect, and understanding among all religious groups in Ghana.
