The Tamale Circuit Court has granted bail to two midwives from the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga who are facing charges in connection with the disappearance of a newborn at the facility.

The accused persons, Frank Atanga, 52, and Mariam Mohammed, 32, appeared before the court presided over by Her Honour Afua Srakubea Agyeman-Darbu on Thursday, June 18.

The two have been charged with conspiracy to steal and abduction in relation to the missing baby.

The court granted each accused person bail in the sum of GH¢150,000 with two sureties.

They are expected to reappear before the Tamale Circuit Court on July 9, 2026, for the continuation of the case.

Prosecutors allege that the two played roles in the circumstances surrounding the missing child, leading to their arrest and subsequent prosecution.

The disappearance of the newborn attracted widespread attention within the East Gonja Municipality and beyond, with many residents expressing concern over the incident and calling for a thorough investigation to establish the facts and ensure justice is served.

Although details of the prosecution’s evidence have not yet been fully presented in open court, the charges suggest that investigators believe there was a coordinated effort linked to the alleged disappearance of the infant.

The accused persons have not been convicted and remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.

The court adjourned the matter and ordered both accused persons to reappear on July 9, 2026, when proceedings are expected to continue.
