Employees of the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) in Tema have demanded the removal of the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, accusing him of poor leadership and mismanagement of the aluminium firm.

The workers, through their union, insist that VALCO has the capacity to operate independently without bringing in outside investors. They contend that repeated claims by the GIADEC CEO about heavy losses and mounting debt are overstated and intended to support arguments for external investment.

The union also raised concerns about government-led efforts to attract what it described as “strategic investors,” arguing that the process effectively amounts to divesting the company. They are calling for the suspension of such plans to allow for a comprehensive assessment of VALCO’s actual operational and financial potential.

Addressing workers during a demonstration on Monday, February 9, the Local Union Chairman, Samuel Tetteh Agyeman, appealed to the President to terminate Mr. Ankrah’s appointment, stating that he lacks the competence required to lead GIADEC.

He further revealed that repeated efforts by the union to engage the CEO in dialogue over the concerns raised have been unsuccessful.
